Moving to OKC

We are getting ready to move to okc but have never been there before.  I have googled all the images I can of okc and surrounding areas for good running environments, how about a couple of hints.

I notice what seems to be a long paved path that runs along the river downtown, is this a place to consider running?

I've seen in comments Lake Hefner is popular, I like to run 4-6 and 8-12 miles when out 4 to 5 days a week...

We are coming in late June to scout the area but are leaning towards city living, any comments on that?

Thanks in advance for any advice that can be given..

    Sincerely,

Boat House downtown is great start along side the river ... and lake hefner is good too - 9 miles around.  those are my two favorite spots.  there's other trails out there, which I haven't tried but will.

You have about 6 -7 miles of paved trails on each side of the river to run or bike.  They are not as popular as the Lake Hefner trails but with the improvements being made around the boathouses they are starting to get more use.  Lake Hefner does have water fountains and porta potties the river does not other than the facilities at the boathouse.   Lake Hefner is mostly surrounded by residential properties vs the river mostly industrial properties.  See our link to the left on Places To Run.

Thanks, Alex and Chuck for the reply, I look forward to running soon in both areas.

Again, not knowing the area and from what I can see on google satellite, it looks as though there is tremendous work going on around the river for running paths,(not sure how old satellite photos are) is there an issue with crime that might keep people away or are locals just use to and settled in the Lake Hefner area?  I guess if it is mostly industrial, not much to look at???

Also, do the two sides of the river paths connect or do you run on one side or the other?

    Thanks Again,
    D. Nelson

There are several bridges where you can cross, but I tend to stay on whichever side I've started on.  I run there frequently by myself and have never felt unsafe.  I think both Lake Hefner and the river trails are great for running, as long as you aren't looking for many hills.  I like to go to Mitch Park in Edmond to get hills in.
