The running community has lost a great friend and competitor. Fisher Lewis passed away on December 13, 2009. Please lift up his family and friends in prayer during this difficult time.
Here is his obituary from The Oklahoman:
Fisher D. "Fish" Lewis, 88, of Bethany OK, beloved Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend and Christian, died December 13, 2009 peacefully surrounded by family at Integris Hospice Center of respiratory failure. Fisher was born January 24, 1921 in South Carrollton, KY to the late Dayton and Mernie Lewis and grew up in Cleaton, KY. Fisher married Kathryn Ricketts, the love of his life in 1941. Fisher served in the Army Air Corp during WWII. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, Fisher and Kay moved to Old Hickory, TN where he worked for Parks & Recreation before moving to Chicago in 1947. Fisher worked for Western Electric from 1952 until 1969 then transferred to Oklahoma City where he retired after 30 years of loyal employment. Fisher was a member of Seminole Point Church of Christ. He was also a member of WEOKIE Running Club. Fisher was an amazing athlete with a zeal for living and always strived to be the best at whatever he put his mind to. In 1939 Fisher was the Chicago Golden Gloves Champion, then competed in 12 professional fights holding a 10-1-1 record. He also was a boxing instructor while serving in the Army. Fisher was known for his love of cars, boats & motorcycles. Fisher & Kay rode thousands of miles on his motorcycle even traveling to California & back. Fisher made some of his most amazing achievements when he started his running career in Daytona Beach at the age of 57. At the age of 60 Fisher ran his first marathon in three hours and 51 minutes and continued running for the next 28+ years winning countless medals, trophies and establishing many records that stand today. Fisher ran races all over the US competing in 5k, 10k and marathons and returned to Daytona Beach many times to race with his son and great-grandson in the annual Easter Beach Run. Although Fisher was a wonderful athlete and made amazing achievements while competing, his family was his greatest achievement. Fisher was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Kathryn, 4 sisters & 4 brothers. He is survived by his sister, Martha McBride; 3 children, Michael & Jan Lewis, Judy Lewis (Jim), Lisa & Steve Richardson; 8 grandchildren, Michael Lewis Jr. (Pam), Donna Metts (Scott), Tracy Breem (Glenn), Rebecca Williams (John), Dr. Travis Brown, Christina Davis (Thomas), Dacia Hudelson (Patrick), Dustin Richardson (Elizabeth); 14 great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog Sammy Dan. The family would like to thank all those that tenderly cared for Fisher. The family will receive friends and family for viewing and visitation Friday, Dec. 18, 2009 from 6-8pm at Mercer Adams Funeral Home, 3925 N. Asbury, Bethany, OK. Funeral services will be held at Seminole Pointe Church of Christ, 16300 N. May Ave., Sat., Dec. 19, 2009 at 10:00am.
